Hi @JHajek Happy to help clarify the difference between the company domain name vs the website URL.
The domain name is populated automatically by HubSpot using the @company.com portion of the email for associated contacts. This is the root domain (the company.com part only)
Company Domain is also the unique identifier for companies, which helps deduplicate records.
The domain name is not always the URL used for their website, for example some websites use a subdomain of www. and some don’t.
The website URL is a clickable link to the live website for the company. This may or may not include www. and could be http:// or https:// or if they have a different subdomain like deals.company or info.company
From the Knowledge Base:
- Company domain name: the company’s website domain. HubSpot Insights uses this domain to provide you with basic information about the company. Every property marked with an asterisk (*) can be populated automatically by HubSpot Insights once the domain name is populated.
- Website URL*: the company’s web address. Filling in this property will also fill in Company domain name.
If you create a company and populate their website URL, it will also add the company domain name automatically (which is why Website URL is commonly used on website forms).
If you use company domain name on a website form, someone might enter the full https://www.company.com address, which isn’t their domain, but if you use Website URL then both get updated.
Here’s an example of the difference in the company record:
If I click the open in new tab link for the Website URL it will open the website.
If the company doesn’t have a redirect from https:// and http:// to the www. subdomain, then the Company domain name wouldn’t open the website, it would return an error.
Furthermore, some company domain names aren’t their website URL at all.
For example, a company could use @company.com for their email addresses, but their website is actually published as www.coolsolutionforyourproblem.com
Long story short, the domain is what provides the enriched data within the rest of the company record (number of employees, software used, LinkedIn page, etc.)
Additionally, if you create a new company and you copy/paste their website URL into the field, HubSpot automatically changes it to the root domain only.
For example, entering https://www.worqflow.co will change it automatically to worqflow.co
Once the company record is created and the website URL is populated from the domain, it won’t trigger a change to the website URL if you change the domain - they become independent properties. I don’t know the “why” but there are many situations where you wouldn’t want them to remain directly tied together.
I hope this helps clarify, happy to help if you have further questions!
