# Closed Lost Deal Validation Rules

When users move a deal to the stage “Closed Lost”, we want them to be forced to fill in at least one of two picklist fields.

Unqualified Reason

Requalifying Reason

Can we fire custom validation rules? If not, is the best solution to create a new deal stage called:

“Closed Lost Unqualified”

“Closed Lost Requalifying”

Hi @MMetros5,

You can apply these rules in the settings. Navigate to Settings \> Objects \> Deals \> Pipelines. Select your pipeline, hover your mouse over the Closed lost stage and you should see a button Edit properties appear.

You can then select a property on the left and set it to required on the right.

Now, a popup will show:

@karstenkoehler This does not answer my question.

If I want to require one of two fields, is that something I can do in Hubspot? Otherwise, should I create two separate stages so that I can require them separately for each stage?

Hi @MMetros5,

Yes, that would be an option here. Generally, it’s recommended to set up deal stages in a linear way, without deals skipping stages but if this is a core requirement of yours and you don’t see any issues arising from this in reporting, go for it.

If we have reps that select a required “Closed Lost Reason” from the drop down menu, is there a way that we can add a selection like “Other: \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_” and have them fill in a reason if it doesnt fit with any of the selections?
