Our envelope return path domains all have SPF configured and for the time being this should be sufficient. The reason we also recommend configuring SPF on the friendlyFrom domain is because it adds an extra layer of security and we are anticipating stricter requirements to come in the future. TL;dr- it’s not required but recommend in the event that future restrictions come on board!
