Clarification about tracking / UTM for emails associated to multiple campaigns

Now that we are able to associate assets to multiple campaigns (yay :tada: ), I’m hoping someone can clarify behavior related to marketing emails used across multiple campaigns. The docs state of already sent marketing emails:

Traffic to your website from a link clicked in the email will not be associated with the new campaign, and will not appear on the campaign details page or in campaign analytics. Such traffic will remain associated with the original campaign (or no campaign, if one wasn’t selected) based on the tracking parameters automatically added to the link URL when the email was sent.

My question is: Once a new campaign is associated with the email, are link clicks/traffic in future sends of the email associated with the new campaign? e.g. we create an email and associate it with Campaign A, send it, contacts interact, etc. Later, we associate Campaign B with the same email. If we send the email again as part of Campaign B, will the contact interactions then be attributed to Campaign B only? What if there is overlap between the two campaigns - will contact interactions be attributed correctly to the campaigns based on when they were associated?

We all know things get complicated with multiple associations…many thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi @Keri,

I just tested this - adding a new campaign did not affect the utm_campaign parameter. In my test, the previous campaign’s utm still applied even after associating a new campaign.

Both campaign’s analytics should include the email performance, but anything based on the utm_campaign (e. g. traffic analytics, original source properties) seem to default to the first associated campaign.

Best regards!

Hey Keri, Karsten is right. The UTM link is set when you send it and doesn’t change if you associate a campaign later.

For future sends, if you need a new campaign, update the UTM manually or clone the email. Links that were already sent will continue using the original UTM value, while campaign reporting may depend on when the email was associated with the campaign.

That’s all :+1:
