Hello,

Fairly new developer here.

I’m trying to locate my main website navigation code but can’t find the referenced file in Design Manager.

**Current Setup:**

- **Active Theme:** RiverSideEpiCenter August2024
- **Issue:** Need to modify main site navigation structure

**What I’ve Found:** My templates/layouts/base.html contains:

```auto
{% block header %}
{% if widget_data.page_settings.select_header == 'site_header' %}
{% global_partial path='../partials/header.html' %}
{% endif %}
{% endblock header %}
```

**Problem:**

- The file ../partials/header.html is referenced but **doesn’t exist** in Design Manager
- I’ve checked both:
  - RiverSideEpiCenter August2024/partials/ (root level)
  - RiverSideEpiCenter August2024/templates/partials/

- Only files present are header-v2.html and footer-v2.html (these belong to a separate area within website that has its own navigation menu and styling)

**What I Can See:**

- Live website shows full navigation menu working perfectly
- base.html preview in Design Manager shows the correct navigation

**Questions:**

1. Where else could the header.html partial file be located?
2. Could the navigation be generated differently than file-based partials?
3. How can I locate the actual navigation code to modify the menu structure?

Any guidance on locating this missing navigation file would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @estradat
this is your site? [https://riversideepicenter.com/](https://riversideepicenter.com/)
The header shows in the partial

`<div data-global-resource-path="RiverSideEpiCenter_August2024/templates/partials/header.html">`

Which says to me with certainty that the header partial is at “RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024/templates/partials/header.html”
The theme naming convention Theme\_Month\_Year (i.e. RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024) feels to me like maybe a previous developer was a bit messy with the file structure (total guess).
You say you looked in “RiverSideEpiCenter August2024/templates/partials/”
Are you 100% certain you’re in the right theme? The live site uses “RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024/templates/partials/header.html”.
Could totally be a pedantic point but your path doesn’t have an underscore between RiverSideEpiCenter and August2024. So could there be two themes there? “RiverSideEpiCenter August2024” and “RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024”?

Hey Barry. Thank you so much for the response. Yes that is my companie’s website. I’m adding a screenshot of what my file structure looks like.

I did fail to mention that I am using the RiversideEpiCenter\_August2024 as my current theme and like you said, because the code directly references **RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024/templates/partials/header.html** directly, technically it should exist in that exact folder location but it doesn’t. I’ve tried searching for this exact partial in other folders but no luck. It’s very odd. If I preview base.html I can clearly see my navigation and footer.

Thank you for the help!

Thanks for the tag @STierney!
@estradat take a look in the theme.json of RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024
look for an “extends” value to determine if it’s a child theme and what the parent theme is.

Hey Barry,

Thank you again for yourself. When I open the theme.json inside that folder I get this.

```lia-code-sample
{
 "label" : "RiverSideEpiCenter August2024 Theme",
 "preview_path" : "./templates/website-page.html",
 "screenshot_path" : "./images/template-previews/website-page.jpg",
 "enable_domain_stylesheets" : false,
 "is_available_for_new_content" : true,
 "extends" : "MigrationBase",
 "responsive_breakpoints" : [ {
 "mediaQuery" : "@media (max-width: 767px)",
 "messages" : { },
 "name" : "mobile",
 "previewWidth" : {
 "units" : "px",
 "value" : 477
 }
 } ],
 "version" : "2.0",
 "author" : {
 "name" : "",
 "email" : ""
 },
 "license" : "./license.txt",
 "hide_all_default_modules" : false
}
```

Not 100% sure what it all means but any help is appreciated!

@estradat great, we’re on the right path!
so that means RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024 is a child theme of MigrationBase. Which actually fits with what @Stephanie-OG informed me about your naming convention (Theme\_MonthYear) - that it is employed by the migrations team.
Go to MigrationBase/templates/partials and you’ll find your header.html
It’s best not to edit it there but to rightclick and clone it to your child theme (RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024)

> **{% global\_partial %}:** This function is more powerful. It can render a file from anywhere in your portal’s Design Manager, relative to the root directory. It’s designed for reusing code across different themes and templates.

Sorry @GRajput, this simply isn’t the case. Global partials are used to create global content across your site (see [documentation).](https://developers.hubspot.com/docs/guides/cms/content/global-content)

They are no more powerful than any other Hubl tag in terms of acessing content from anywhere in the portal. All that would matter is the path. i.e. a module from a different theme _could_ be used anywhere if the path lead to another theme.
I think you might be on the right track with the Parent Theme though.
@estradat that’s where I think you should look (assuming RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024 is a child theme). Then you’d clone the file from the parent to your child theme and make your edits there.

@BarryGrennan

Now that I’ve cloned the header.html to RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024/templates/partials, I can see what my current website header looks like, which is great!

This matches my header design exactly, but it’s inheriting from the parent MigrationBase theme.

 ![153329i3E73273262836EDE.PNG](https://d2qpr2jzcazej7.cloudfront.net/original/3X/d/7/d7c351e52fdc21e9664c8d7a7c7759649b1a4858.png)

When I preview base.html, I can see my child theme’s design with the current website header structure.

 ![153330iCE6CB6E37BC94FDE.PNG](https://d2qpr2jzcazej7.cloudfront.net/original/2X/b/b1bf91d0801feb48ae036fd41946eabda7f4938c.png)

Current Understanding:

- My header.html is calling the header-section module from the parent theme: {% module “header\_section” path=“../../modules/header-section” %}
- The actual navigation logic is in MigrationBase/modules/header-section/module.html
- When I preview base.html inside RiverSideEpiCenter\_August2024/templates/layouts, I can see the current header structure

Questions:

1. Should I clone the header-section module to my child theme and modify the navigation structure there, OR work through HubSpot’s Menu Manager to restructure the menu?
2. If I clone the module, should I update my header.html path reference from ../../modules/header-section to ../modules/header-section to use my local copy?

Any guidance on the recommended approach would be greatly appreciated. I’m really trying to understand what the structure here is because I’m not sure the hubspot migrations team was doing me any favors 🤣

Thank you

@estradat,

Anything you want to edit the code of should be cloned from the parent to the child.

Don’t change any paths. The only reason you would have to change paths is if they were absolute paths i.e. said “MigrationBase/templates” etc.

But those are relative paths. They point to a folder in your child theme if it’s there and if not they pass through to the parent.
