Can File API load mov file to the Hubspot file manager?

I’m using a serverless function to upload files to a file manager. Most formats like .mp4, .png, and others upload just fine—but .mov files consistently fail.

Does anyone know if there’s a specific issue with uploading .mov files through the File API?

Hi @abbyxia,

Can you confirm if the Content-Type header is set to video/quicktime or video/mov?

Additionally, have you tried uploading smaller .mov files? Just in case the issue is due to the file size.

Hi, @GiantFocal,

I tested with a .mov file that was only 11MB, and also tried an 8MB file, but I’m still getting an internal error.

I attempted to change the Content-Type header to both video/quicktime and video/mov, but received a 415 Unsupported Media Type error in both cases.
I’ve been using the file API to upload the files

https://api.hubapi.com/files/v3/

Any idea what might be going wrong?

thanks

Hi @abbyxia

MOV files are supported by HubSpot’s files tool and Files API; if an upload fails, check the request format and applicable file-size limits rather than assuming the .mov format itself is unsupported. Try uploading a smaller file, and if it is still not accepting .mov file, then you can convert your file type to mp4.

Hi @GRajput,

The file size was 8MB, which should be well within acceptable limits for testing. We also have a safeguard that raises an error if the file exceeds 100MB, so size doesn’t appear to be the issue.

Interestingly, an MP4 file was uploaded successfully using the exact same code. The issue seems to be specific to .mov files.

Do you know if .mov files are supported by the File API? We’re able to upload .mov files directly through the CRM interface, but it appears they may not be allowed via the API.

Much appreciated!

thanks

Abby

Hey, @abbyxia :waving_hand: I wonder if you hit on an edge case issue here with how .mov files are being handled specifically by the API. I’m going to make a test, and I’ll follow up here. Thank you for all the testing you’ve done so far. Talk soon! — Jaycee

Hi Jaycee,

Any luck with this issue?
Quick update — turns out the MP4 file didn’t upload after all. My apologies, I thought it had gone through, but it’s still showing the same error as the MOV file. So basically, the video file can’t be uploaded to the file manager through API.

thanks

Abby

Hey, @abbyxia :waving_hand: I wonder if the factor is serverless-functions here? I ask because in my test both formats uploaded successfully for me using Postman. But I did that mainly to simplify my test and verify the endpoint worked in a very simple test. Have you tried sending via Postman in your own testing? — Jaycee

Hi Jaycee,
Thanks for your updates. We tried uploading the same video through Postman
but still had no luck. Just to clarify—did you upload the video using the
URL or the base64 code?
Best Regards,
Abby

Hey, @abbyxia :waving_hand: I did not. My read from the Files API doc is that we should send the files using a `multipart/form`-data request. I can share screenshots of my Postman requests for both files or the response JSON if that is helpful. But it may be that your next best step is to report this as a potential issue through the Developer Feedback form I linked in a previous reply. And we can work in this thread more if that is helpful too. Talk soon — Jaycee

Hi @Jaycee_Lewis, thanks again for your support.

I’ve figured out that the internal error I was getting with .mov and .mp4 files wasn’t caused by the file type, but by the file size. For example, when I uploaded a small video (278 KB, less than a second long) through the Files API, it worked successfully.

This makes me wonder:

  • What is the maximum file size limit for the POST /files/v3/files API?
  • Has anyone else run into issues when trying to upload larger files (e.g., multi-MB videos or PDFs)?

It would be really helpful to know if there’s an official limit or a workaround for larger uploads.
thanks Abby

Hi Abby @abbyxia,

Thank you for following up and sharing your findings, your troubleshooting process is really valuable to others who may encounter similar issues!
As of now, I can see on this article “Supported file types and sizes” that the maximum file size limit is:
- Files up to 20 MB for accounts with only access to HubSpot’s free tools.
- Files up to 2 GB for accounts with paid subscriptions. If a file is 1 GB or more, you may experience issues when uploading the file.
Thanks for the valuable feedback regarding the API documentation “CMS API | File Manager”, I have shared it internally.
But please note that upload performance can depend on network stability, file type, and API rate limits, so sometimes users experience issues before reaching that limit, especially with larger files or fluctuating connections.

I’d love to put you in touch with our Top Experts: Hi @sylvain_tirreau, @Anton and @GRajput do you have any insights or tips to share to help @abbyxia with uploading larger files, please?
Have a wonderful day and thanks so much!

Hey, @abbyxia :waving_hand: I ran a quick test using an .mp4 file and then converted it using ffmpeg to .mov. Unfortunately (fortunately?) I could not reproduce the issue and both file types uploaded without issue.

If you are still experiencing this, I’d suggest submitting this as feedback using the Developer Feedback form. While it is not a direct support form, it is the best way to report developer-related product issues.

Best,

jaycee

Hey, @abbyxia :raising_hands: To piggyback on @GiantFocal’s great reply, along with testing and checking the headers, can you share an example request URL, body, response, and error message, please? (whew lol that was a lot of requests)

Thank you! — Jaycee

Has anyone gotten this working?

It seems that serverless functions have stricter limits, both in size and especially in execution time. I think that’s what’s wrong. You can try to bypass these restrictions with Accounts Dashboard | HubSpot (you put your file on a server and transfer it to your file system).
No guarantee that this is the problem.

Hi @abbyxia, hope you’re doing well!
I wanted to get back to you on this, and let you know that we heard your feedback, and we’ve made an update to this documentation: “Files API” to clearly highlight the size and format limits. We’ve also added a link to an article that lists all the associated limits, making this information even easier to find.
Thanks again for sharing your feedback with us. It helps improve HubSpot for our whole Community :orange_heart:
Have a fantastic day and we look forward to seeing you around the Community! :hugs:
