When your content is shared through others on social media, that results in additional backlinks to your site (see this blog post for more on this topic).
When your content gets shared on social, it increases the reach of your content. In a perfect world with perfect content, someone would see your content and find it useful. Then they might include a backlink to your content from their own content, thus generating a backlink.
