Hi,

I wanted to understand how does the automatic association to open deals work specifically for call engagement created using API.

Example:

An api creates an engagement object linked to a contact names “Mark” and a company named “Acme”.

If mark has only one open deal but acme has 5 open deals, how would the auto association work? Will this engagement be linked to all 5 deals?

Hey @sajjanstrings,

The answer here is that it really depends on how you choose to integrate, it’s certainly possible but not the default behaviour.

By default If an engagement (Call, Meeting, Task, Note, Email) is created via the [CRM API](https://developers.hubspot.com/docs/api/crm/associations) and associated to a contact they will not be automatically associated to other records in the CRM as per this [documentation](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/crm-setup/associate-activities-with-records). What needs to happen is that the integrator also makes a call to an endpoint to define additional associations to other objects.

what if we were creating it from the older API:

Hey @sajjanstrings,

The same applies, it won’t automatically associate to other records. It will only associate to the records with the IDs you provide in your request.

Also, I’d recommend using the newer versions of the API as ultimately the legacy endpoints will be deprecated at some point.

I tried testing this and looks like Hubspot did auto associate an
engagement with a deal that I didn’t explicitly ask it to associate the
engagement with.
It seems to look at all open deals for a contact and auto-linking to them
all.
