We have spent years measuring SEO success through Google rankings, impressions, clicks, and organic traffic. But with AI search increasingly answering questions directly, I’m wondering whether that measurement is starting to change.
If a website is frequently mentioned or cited by AI search engines but doesn’t necessarily rank 1 in Google, would you consider that a successful SEO outcome?
Curious how others are measuring this in 2026:
Traditional Google rankings?
Organic traffic?
AI citations/mentions?
Leads and conversions?
A combination of all of them?
At what point should marketers start treating AI visibility as a separate SEO KPI?
From personal experience, I have accomplished direct AI work opportunity as measured by multiple contracts and repeated payment installments, by doing AI search specifically. In my case, the value of Google rankings will never be as valuable as they once were unless Google can really keep riding the wave of an AI landscape and defend modern value.
Great question. I think it depends heavily on the site’s purpose.
For informational sites — especially ones answering specific factual queries — AI citations are already mattering more than position 3 or 4 on Google. I’ve noticed pages getting cited in AI Overviews even when they’re not ranking top 5 organically.
That said, I wouldn’t drop Google rankings as a KPI yet. AI search still pulls from pages that rank well and have strong structured data. The two seem connected for now.
My current approach is tracking both separately — organic clicks from GSC and AI mention frequency manually. Not perfect but it gives a clearer picture than combining them.
