Allow CRM UI extensions to open the native email composer in reply mode

Hi HubSpot Developer Community,

We are developing FollowPilot, a HubSpot CRM UI extension that generates personalized follow-up emails from a contact’s CRM and conversation context.

Our current button uses CrmActionButton to open HubSpot’s native one-to-one email composer with the recipient, subject, and generated body prefilled.

However, we would like to provide a “Reply in last thread” button that behaves exactly like clicking Reply on an email engagement in the contact timeline:

  • Open the native one-to-one email composer

  • Associate it with a specific email engagement or thread

  • Display the previous conversation behind the three dots

  • Prefill the generated reply body

  • Let the user review, edit, and manually send the email

This is not an automatic-send use case. User validation in the native composer is important.

Is there currently any supported action, SDK method, deep link, or other mechanism that allows a CRM UI extension to open the composer in reply mode using an email engagement ID or thread ID?

If not, could this capability be considered for the UI Extensions SDK?

I can confirm that the SEND_EMAIL action opens the native one-to-one composer with initialEmailSubject and initialEmailBody prefill support, which is what you’re already using. ENGAGEMENT_APP_LINK can navigate to a specific engagement ID on the timeline, but it opens the engagement viewer, not the reply composer, and doesn’t attach a reply draft.

There is indeed no supported “reply mode” action that exists. There is no actionType (or SDK method, or deep link) that:

  • Opens the composer associated with a specific email engagement/thread ID
  • Displays the prior conversation (“behind the three dots”)
  • Prefills a reply body in that threaded context

The CRM action components overview lists the complete set of actions (PREVIEW_OBJECT, ADD_NOTE, ADD_TASK, SEND_EMAIL, SCHEDULE_MEETING, OPEN_RECORD_ASSOCIATION_FORM, ENGAGEMENT_APP_LINK, RECORD_APP_LINK, PAGE_APP_LINK, EXTERNAL_URL), none support opening a composer in reply-to-thread mode with an engagement ID.

For the feature request, I’d recommend submitting it through the Developer Feedback form so that the Team can have their eyes on it.
