New domain + hosting: realistic SEO plan to rank #1 locally — am I missing anything?

Hi everyone,
I’m starting with a new domain and new hosting for a local business website.
My plan is to do SEO and try to rank #1 in my hometown first, then expand to nearby areas.

Here’s what I plan to do:

Buy domain and hosting
Build a simple, fast website
Do on-page SEO (titles, meta, headings, content)
Create location-based pages
Do basic local SEO (Google Business Profile)
Publish helpful content and blogs
Try to get a few local backlinks

My questions:

Is it realistic to aim for #1 ranking with a brand-new domain? If yes, what timeframe should I expect (3 months, 6 months, 12 months)?
What are the most common mistakes beginners make in local SEO?
Should I focus more on Google Business Profile first or website SEO first?
Any must-do technical SEO items I shouldn’t miss at the start?

I’m open to honest feedback if my plan is unrealistic or missing key steps.

First, best of luck with your business!

To answer some of your questions:

It depends. In a small town with little competition you could rank very quickly. In a large metropolitan area with lots of competition it will take longer. It will also depend on the type of activities you're doing and authority you're able to build. If you're producing a ton of high-quality, relevant content, you could likely rank locally in a shorter timeframe (probably less than 6 months). If you're only relying on your website and a generic localized page, it could definitely take longer.

In regards to backlinks. A few high-quality, related backlinks are more powerful than 100 garbage backlinks. Shortcuts rarely work.
Replicating the same content for a bunch of different localities just for the purposes of content. Google doesn't need it anymore, but if you're insistent, use a canonical tag and point back to 1-main version of that page.
You should do both. I'm not sure that I'd do one and not the other. Get your Google Business Profile up there and start getting reviews. Be sure it's a complete and accurate profile. At the same time build your site and start producing quality content.
Ensure you're site is able to be crawled and indexed. If you're building from a theme, use something reputable that loads quickly. Ensure your SSL is set up correctly and everything directs to the HTTPS version.

Welcome to the Community @MKumar98! ALong with @Josh I want to say all the best on your business! And I'll just add one thought in addition to what Josh said. While I wouldn't focus solely on the Google profile, I'd definitely lean in pretty heavy. Depending on what your business is, if you're focusing locally, that's your best bet. People searching for a local solution should find you and be able to call, text, or schedule an appointment, and find your local business. Relying on a GBP is a great way to start building that awareness.

Good plan overall.

With a new domain, #1 can happen for low-competition local terms, but usually think 6–12 months rather than 3.

A common mistake is chasing broad keywords too early. Start with service + location terms, make sure your Google Business Profile is fully optimized, and keep your NAP consistent across the website and listings.

I’d work on both together, but Google Business Profile often brings the fastest local visibility.

A few technical basics not to miss: fast load speed, mobile-first design, clean URL structure, proper internal linking, indexability checks, XML sitemap, and local business schema.

Also, spend time understanding what the current top local competitors are doing before publishing pages. That usually saves a lot of trial and error.
