How well does your website serve its visitors?

Think about the saying, “People don’t buy a quarter-inch drill; they buy a quarter-inch hole.” This is a perfect example of the Jobs Theory in action. When someone purchases a drill, they’re hiring that drill to do the job of creating a hole in their wall.

What is the job people are hiring your website to do? How are you currently solving those needs? Keep in mind, your site may have several different “jobs.” Some people may be coming there to find out about your pricing, while others might want to speak with your sales team. The vast majority of our traffic is current customers logging in to access their curriculum. It can be hard to parse out potential customers from that traffic. The majority of our inbound marketing traffic are looking for curricula that will work for their community of learners.

The website www.Somnofy.com serves a multitude of different jobs. This makes it hard to streamline the flow of information since we are covering at least three different buyer personas.

For this reason, we have partitioned the webpage into three segments which represent our markets. This is done prior to even explaining what Somnofy (the product) is. Existing customers quickly find help through the Support button in the main menu and people interested in learning about the company can find what they are looking for in the About section.

I'm new to this and I've not come across the Jobs Theory before; I'll definitely be looking into it. I'm not sure about this quote though; “People don’t buy a quarter-inch drill; they buy a quarter-inch hole.” You don't buy a quarter-inch drill; you buy a quarter-inch drill bit and usually you would already own the drill or you would be buying that as well. In my mind the job of the drill is to give you the power to put small holes in things when and where you decided to and the job of the drill bit is to make that a specific size hole in a specific material (assuming the cooresponding drill has the required rating). Am I totally overthinking this and missing the point entirely?

Based on how we currently get visitors, our website is intended to serve the role of reinforcing our credibility as service providers. However, we are a classic case of the cobbler's son having no shoes. We reiterate our service offering, but truthfully, aside from a couple of blog posts to demonstrate thought leadership, we have not really put any effort into making our website a particularly productive touchpoint for prospects, leads, or even existing customers. We certainly have not been unaware of the need to give this more attention.

Our website has two jobs, to get consumers to purchase a game and corporates to enquiry about a group booking. For both it is to convey the benefits and quality of our games that will match their needs.

This is an interesting way at looking at this...

My website has 2 jobs to do. It's primary function is to act as lead generation. Customers are coming to it for information on their project, the website helps to move them through that funnel by getting help from the experts. The second is education. Customers use the website to educate them on their projects or various other projects they could be doing.

The question I have is, how can I drive more of the people there for education to take the leap from informative to lead?
