topic The difference between tasks and activities in Dashboards & Reporting

I have seen some discussions here about the differences between task types and activity types and, specifically task/activity statuses. But I am still confused as to what the fundamental difference is between the activity and the task when they both can be labeled email, call, etc. Is there a hierarchy or something that differentiates them? Can someone explain this in a way that doesn't sound like circular reasoning? (I don't mean to be rude, I just really couldn't wrap my brain around the explanations given.)

Hi @KBishop2,

Happy to help! Activities include:

Calls

Emails

Meetings

Notes

Tasks

LinkedIn messages

WhatsApp messages

SMS messages

Postal mail

See here: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/manually-log-activities-on-records

Additionally, tasks can be about something:

This is simply a categorization of tasks. It could be a task to make a call or a task to send an email, for example. The task however remains a task. If you complete a task to make a call, you would log a call (see activity list above). If you send an email (see activity list above), that would complete a task to send an email.

It would be the equivalent of you planning to call someone (task activity with task type = call) and actually making the call (call activity)

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!

<LI-WRAPPER></LI-WRAPPER>

Thanks, Karsten! It's not your fault, but I feel like HubSpot has created a very confusing circular logic with task types including activity names, and activity types including task names. It is a strange logic and it's creating confusion in our team about how to mark their work and for leaders to build reports on work. But we'll figure it out. Thanks so much for your time!
