Parent/Child Account Best Practices

Hi! I'm working with a client and we are setting up all their child accounts for active customers (currently they do not have any of these in Hubspot).

They have some accounts with a high number of "children." One customer has a 150 child accounts. For this customer, all child account bill through one address and have the same product/price mix. They track product usage for each location but that is outside of Hubspot.

When address and product are the same, do you always recommend creating more accounts still? It feels like a lot of extra data/work given the volume here. Are there other solutions for locations I'm not thinking of?

For context, the client is on professional so we can't track through a custom object.

I think the answer here depends on what specifically you need to gather from child accounts and how you need them to function. Your reporting and segmentation needs will also influence the best course of action here. I'm not sure what your use case is, but I have some general thoughts below!

I know you mentioned that the billing address is the same across child accounts, but is their physical address the same? If not, that would be a solid use case for creating child companies for each unique location. That would enable you to target individual child companies by geography.

The same would go for any other key data points — company size, industry, product(s) — storing that unique info in each company record would greatly assist your segmentation capabilities.

Thanks! They have a unique address and also internal Group Code. Leaning the direction of individual child accouts for all of them.
