Caps on how many companies users can own

We’re looking to cap how many companies a sales rep can actively prospect at one time to drive better focus and ensure fair lead distribution as our sales team scales.

We haven't found a native HubSpot way to limit the number of companies per rep, which feels like a pretty common requirement.

Has anyone solved this?

Workflows, Ops Hub, custom objects, external tools, or creative workarounds all welcome!

(Current setup = ownership is at company level. Reps can assign themselves to any company in their territory, companies automatically get unassigned based on lack of activity)

You could submit this as a request in the ideas section of the community: https://community.hubspot.com/t5/HubSpot-Ideas/idb-p/HubSpot_Ideas

As of now, a solution would be entirely custom-coded, as far as I know - a workflow only assigning companies when the user owns fewer records than the limit and potentially re-assigning if they exceed it. This would require either building a private app based on the HubSpot API or custom-coded workflow actions.
