How to import contacts and associate them with companies?

Hello all, seeking solution for a basic import job but I don't understand HubSpot import process well enough.

All companies have already been imported into HubSpot.
I have a file that includes the companies and company IDs plus the contact info.

But having trouble setting up the import mapping.

Would I select a single object or multiple object import type since it's companies and contacts? All info is on one sheet by the way.

Here's my import file and it has the Company ID column.

All companies have already been imported.
Column D is the Company Name and column E is the HubSpot Company IDs for those records.

I'm having trouble trying to figure out which column to map with which field.

I tried mapping the Company ID column to the Record ID I got this error 😞

Hi @Rob_206,

It looks like you're generally on the right path. To associate records upon import, you need to import both objects at the same time, either one file with both company and contact information or two files for each. And correct, it's crucial to map the record ID, otherwise HubSpot might create company duplicates.

About the error, you could do one the following things:

Export all company records first and compare the import and the Excel file for the mismatch in record IDs.
Click "Fix import errors" to see if HubSpot directly highlights the rows causing the issue – I haven't experienced this error in a while, for some errors HubSpot points out which rows are affected.
Continue with the import, see which rows fail, then address this part of the import file separately and re-run the import for those 44 records.

I think there's something else going on because I double checked the company IDs and they are correct. I think I am not mapping the fields corerctly. I will keep looking but something is still not right.

I am mapping the Company ID column of my spreadsheet to Record ID from dropdown list.

Since I selected a gingle object -> contacts. Isn't HubSpot expecting these Record IDs to be contact IDs instead of company IDs?

That's where the confusion is on my end. I just don't know what HubSpot expects or how it works under the hood.

This is the mistake. If you want to associate contacts and companies and have a record ID for the company in your file, you must import two objects at the same time.

If you're only importing contacts, HubSpot is expecting the contact's record ID and hence giving you the error.
