Seeking Experiences with Valid8, ZeroBounce, and Clearout for Filtering Junk and Disposable Emails

Hey everyone,

I’m working on a project aimed at improving the quality of leads within a marketing database, particularly by filtering out "junk" and disposable email addresses. These are addresses that might be valid but are primarily used as "dumping grounds" for spam and seldom monitored (not the typical temporary email addresses that expire in 24 hours, but rather, longer-term accounts used only for sign-ups and less active follow-ups). That said, I’m also looking to filter out 24-hour temporary email addresses.

To tackle this, I’m evaluating a few integrations, specifically Valid8, ZeroBounce, and Clearout. I’m looking to hear from anyone who has experience with these tools. In particular, I’d love to know:

Effectiveness: How well do they distinguish between real, valid emails and junk/spam addresses that are rarely monitored?

False Positives: Have you encountered issues where genuine customer emails were mistakenly flagged as junk?

Ease of Use and Integration: Any challenges or insights with integration into platforms like HubSpot?

Cost-Benefit: Given the potential savings on email campaigns and lead quality, do you feel the investment in these tools paid off?

Any tips, insights, or alternative suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi @BENP7,

Disposable email addresses can easily be filtered / deleted / excluded by simply creating an active list, based for example on this resource: https://github.com/disposable/disposable

You can paste all addresses in an "Email domain is any of" list filter, your browser will for a moment behave like it would curse at you if it could, and then you have a list that pulls in all disposable email addresses in your system: https://community.hubspot.com/t5/CRM/Filtering-a-view-with-a-comma-separated-list-of-company-IDs/m-p/381499/highlight/true#M122895

In other words, I wouldn't get a validation tool just to remove disposable email addresses. However, email validation is still an amazing addition to email marketing processes. Here are my responses to your points:

The tools that I have worked with do not distinguish between types of emails, they check whether the email address is valid and can be reached, returning a status ok / bad / not verifiable. If someone chooses to create a throwaway Gmail account and provide that email address, that will show up as okay until they delete the account or it expires after months / years. If however someone makes up an address, the email validation would catch that.

Typically not, no, but in terms of 'can I get my email through to the recipient', yes, you'll have false positives. Just because a contact is validated by a tool doesn't mean your email will get through, as your email sending reputation also plays a role. You might still get a bounce because of your reputation.

Generally easy, either integrated directly or simple export/import processes. This is the easiest part about this entire topic, I'd say.

Yes, I think these tools are very valuable as they help safeguard your email reputation. They're also beneficial feedback for those teams that are responsible for maintaining correct contact data.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!
