I am facing a strange problem. The Source Report from HubSpot has been reporting twice more direct traffic than Google Analytics or other Analytics tools on our site. I already read two HubSpot articles on the subject:

But none of the reasons mentioned above seems to apply in my case. Did any of you faced the same problem and if yes, what was the solution to solve the reporting issue?

Hi @davidbee, thanks for reaching out and for including the fact that you had already gone through the two relevant articles in investigating this problem.

Though there are often some differences in the numbers between HubSpot and Google Analytics reporting, double the traffic in HubSpot would indeed be very unusual.

Can I ask, have you submitted a ticket to the HubSpot Support team through the regular channels regarding this issue? It might be easier to get to the bottom of this through these means, as we would probably need a number of screenshots from your Google Analytics instance and a number of confidential details regarding your reporting.

However, I would be happy to look into this as well, if you'd like to send me a PM with screenshots comparing the numbers in between your two instances. Let me know, and I will dig into it further!

All the best,

Indeed I did submit a ticket and here is the answer.

Not sure I got the answer I wanted. Do you see other potential sources for the discrepancies ?

"

When looking at your results from HubSpot and Google Analytics, we recommend focusing on the trends between the two systems – not comparing X visits from Google Analytics to Y visits in HubSpot. This is mentioned in our documentation about the reasons for differences between the two systems: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/reports/why-do-hubspot-and-google-analytics-not-match. There are many factors as to why the numbers between HubSpot and Google are different including IP filtering, tracking code installation, sessions, source of visit, cross-domain tracking, and in-app traffic.

Primarily, because Google Analytics tracks visits in 30 minute sessions, this is a big reason why HubSpot's metrics are likely to be higher. HubSpot would track many visits during that 30 minutes if the user is going back and forth between your site and an external domain (such as Google)."

Hi @davidbee,

When we first moved to HS awhile back, we experienced similar discrepencies with the data. For awhile we tried to use both sets and find the commonalities & differences. This proved to be tedious and in all honesty, not that useful. We still reference GA data on some occasions, but we now rely on the HubSpot data 90%+ of the time for a few reasons.

This data reports on what really matters: Visits, Contacts, Customers.

It was a waste of time to constantly looking at the 2 data sets when we were making our decisions off of the HubSpot data anyways.

We accepted that there are going to be differences because they are going to track in different ways. Because we are dedicated to HubSpot for the long term, we made the decision to only rely on this data for trends and improvements.

I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but it's working very well for us and has reduced the amount of wasted time significantly.

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. GA bounce rate shows 30%, HS shows 97%!!
GA views show 650, HS views show 2900.
And it's on all pages. Something isn't right.

The short answer is:

Your issue of HubSpot reporting double the Direct traffic compared to Google Analytics is primarily due to fundamental differences in how each platform defines a session and attributes the traffic source.

HubSpot's tracking is focused on the contact journey and often uses a much shorter, or even non-existent, internal timeout, leading it to register a new session more frequently, especially when a user navigates from your site to an external domain and quickly back, or when a session is improperly attributed and defaults to Direct.

Because HubSpot's tracking code loads early and is aggressive about tracking contacts, sessions that should be referrals or organic can easily lose their source before the page fully loads, causing a default classification to Direct.

The long answer is:

The response you received from the support ticket is correct in pointing out the session definition difference, but that's only part of the story, and it doesn't offer a practical solution for the massive Direct traffic disparity.

The key reason HubSpot's Direct traffic is often inflated is not just about the session length, but about how it handles the source assignment logic when the referrer information is missing, which happens more often in a contact-centric CRM tool.

When a user lands on your site and the referrer data (the link they clicked) is stripped - by a redirect chain, an HTTPS to HTTP switch, or a secure app that doesn't pass a referrer - HubSpot will classify this traffic as Direct.

Since HubSpot's script is highly focused on tracking the hubsportutk cookie to identify the contact, it can be more susceptible to capturing these "dark" sessions than Google Analytics, which has evolved sophisticated default channel groupings and internal attribution rules to correct for such loss.

The difference is exacerbated because Google Analytics, particularly GA4, will often default to the last known non-direct channel in its attribution model, whereas HubSpot's source reporting can be more rigid in assigning the initial session source.

To solve this disparity and gain control over the source attribution for your contacts, the best solution is to create a custom, unified data layer using the HubSpot API, the Google Analytics Data API, and a server-side tagging environment like Stape or Google Cloud Platform.

The approach is to stop comparing the two systems and instead use the Google Analytics Data API to extract the highly trusted, cleaned traffic source and session data from Google Analytics.

You then use the HubSpot API to programmatically update or enrich your HubSpot contact records.

The process involves capturing the user's session identifier in Google Tag Manager when they land on your site, sending it to your server-side environment (Stape/GCP), which then uses that ID to query the Google Analytics Data API for the correct source and medium.

This true source data from GA can then be pushed via the HubSpot API into a custom property on the HubSpot contact record, such as GA_Verified_Original_Source.

This bypasses HubSpot's native attribution logic and allows you to build custom reports in HubSpot that are based on the more accurate, curated source data from Google Analytics, effectively blending the strengths of both platforms: the data accuracy of GA with the contact-level intelligence of HubSpot.

This comment was generated with the assistance of an AI tool, incorporating my expertise in conversion tracking 🙂
