It’s the biggest paradox in SEO right now: Your website hits #1, your impressions are climbing, but your click-through rate (CTR) is tanking.

If this sounds familiar, you aren’t doing anything "wrong" with your SEO. The game has simply changed. The culprit? Google’s AI Overview (AIO).

The Rise of the "Zero-Click" Reality
For decades, Google was a librarian: you asked a question, and it gave you a list of books (links). Today, Google is an assistant. It reads the books for you and summarizes the answer right at the top of the page.

With AI Overview, users get exactly what they need without ever clicking a link. Studies show that zero-click searches have now surpassed 60% in 2026.

The question is no longer: "How do I rank #1?" It is: "How do I become the source the AI cites?"

How AI Overview Picks Its Sources
AI doesn’t just pick the #1 organic result. It looks for content that is "machine-readable" and highly authoritative. Here is what matters now:

Direct Answer Blocks: AI looks for clear, 40–60 word summaries right under your headings. If you don't answer the question immediately, the AI moves on.

Structured Knowledge (Not Just Keywords): AI reads semantics. It prefers content with clear H1-H2-H3 hierarchies and clean Schema Markup (FAQ, Article).

The E-E-A-T Signal: AI cites brands it trusts. In 2026, Brand Authority is the new "Backlink."

The "Two-Layer" Content Framework
To survive this shift, we at Midas Agency use a two-layer approach for every piece of content:

Layer 1: The Summary (For the AI): A concise, bulleted answer at the start of every section. This is your "bait" for the AI to grab and cite.

Layer 2: The Deep Dive (For the Authority): Comprehensive analysis, data, and expert insights below the summary. This proves to the AI that you are a Trusted Source, making it more likely to pick your "bait."

Moving Beyond SEO: Welcome to GEO
The era of "Search Engine Optimization" is evolving into GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). While SEO builds your foundation, GEO builds your digital reputation so that AI models like Gemini, SearchGPT, and AI Overview actively promote your brand as the "answer."

Standing still in 2026 means becoming invisible. If your traffic is dropping despite high rankings, it's time to stop optimizing for clicks and start optimizing for citations.

Final Thoughts
AI Overview isn't a trend; it's the new standard. Are you seeing a drop in your CTR despite good rankings? Let’s discuss in the comments—I’d love to hear how you’re adapting your strategy.

#SEO #GEO #AIOverview #DigitalMarketing #MidasAgency #MarketingTrends2026

hello @MidasAgency : This is one of the more honest framings of the current situation I've seen. The "librarian vs assistant" analogy lands well.
One thing worth adding to the GEO conversation that often gets skipped: the attribution problem. When AI Overview cites your content and a user acts on it without clicking, that conversion is invisible in your analytics. You get the brand lift, but your reporting shows nothing. For teams still measuring SEO success purely through GA4 sessions and HubSpot traffic reports, this creates a dangerous blind spot where leadership sees declining traffic and assumes the content strategy is failing, when actually it might be working harder than ever as a citation source.
The practical implication is that branded search volume and direct traffic are becoming more meaningful signals than organic clicks. If those are holding or growing while organic CTR drops, that's actually a sign your GEO presence is working, not failing.
The two-layer framework you described is solid. The only thing I'd add is that the "Layer 1 summary" needs to be written as if you're answering a voice query, not a typed one. Conversational phrasing gets picked up by AI Overview more consistently than keyword-dense summaries, even well-structured ones.
Curious whether anyone is tracking branded search trends alongside CTR drops to make this case internally, that's where I think the real measurement conversation needs to go next.

Hi @MidasAgency!

Really interesting breakdown of the shift toward GEO. In HubSpot, it's worth noting that our SEO tools and content strategy features are continuously evolving to help with exactly this. Structured content, E-E-A-T signals, and authority building are all areas where HubSpot's CMS and blog tools can give you a solid head start.

Thank you for sharing!

@MidasAgency Totally agree on this,

Holding the #1 organic position but losing traffic is becoming much more common now, especially with how Google’s results pages have changed over the last year.

A few things I’ve been noticing:

Even when a page ranks first organically, AI Overviews, ads, featured snippets, and “People Also Ask” sections can reduce clicks significantly because the actual organic result gets pushed lower on the page.

In some cases, search intent shifts over time. A query that used to favor long-form articles may now favor quick answers, comparison tables, videos, or tools.

I’ve also seen older content lose traction when competitors refresh theirs with newer examples, updated stats, or more practical experience-based insights.

One thing that’s helped is reviewing the actual search results page regularly instead of only looking at rankings. Sometimes the ranking stays the same, but the SERP layout changes completely.

Google Search Console is usually the best place to start diagnosing it:

High impressions + lower CTR often points to SERP layout or intent changes

Drops in impressions can sometimes indicate keyword visibility loss or declining search demand

Refreshing content structure, improving answer clarity near the top of the page, and adding newer/useful insights has helped in a lot of cases.
(Taken help from ai)
