How long did it take your traffic to recover after a major update?

Hello everyone,

After the previous core upgrade, I noticed a significant drop in organic traffic on one of my client sites, particularly on pages that had been ranking steadily for months. We tightened content and strengthened internal links, but the recovery has been gradual.

How long did it take your website to recover after a significant update? Did you do anything in particular to make it move faster?

It really depended on what the penalty was for. Are you using any SEO tools like SEMrush, Moz, Ahrefs, etc. to monitor your SEO? If not, I would recommend it as there could be more than tightening of content or strengthening of internal links that is needed to rebound.

In my experience it usually takes a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on how big the update was. Focusing on content quality, fixing technical issues, and improving internal linking seems to help speed things up, but a lot of it is just waiting for recrawling and re-evaluation.

We’ve seen similar patterns across a few of our client sites. Recovery usually took around 1–2 months, and it wasn’t linear, there were noticeable fluctuations.

What helped most was improving content quality, aligning it better with search intent, and updating outdated sections. We also strengthened internal linking to support the affected pages.

In some cases, recovery became more visible after the next core update, suggesting Google needed time to reassess the changes.

Also, make sure you’re closely following all Google guidelines to avoid these kinds of drops in the future.
