WhatsApp vs. Facebook Messenger: which is better?

While WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are both owned by Facebook, the debate between the two messaging systems is still one that can divide a team.

While the most popular global messenger service, WhatsApp is only used by 7% of marketers use WhatsApp for business. Facebook Messenger, on the other hand, was at one time thought to be the future of email.

Both platforms have their pros and cons, but it could be considered a toss up for which platform is better for marketing purposes.

WhatsApp as a user (no ads!), Messenger as a marketer (ads!). I think I'm incapable of giving a straight answer to these questions...

BUT they both pail into insignificance after you've lived in China and used WeChat, which is IMO the undisputed king of messenger apps, incorporating the smoothest way of adding people (QR codes! That are actually used!) and an electronic wallet so you can easily pay for things and send money to friends, e.g. to split the bill with everybody at dinner. Add into that the entire ecosystem of mini-apps you can build for your brand to incorporate anything from chat bots to ecommerce and you can see why its market penetration is up around 90% now (it's essentially 100% in the larger cities).

It'll be interesting when WhatsApp ads arrive (later this year?) whether this pushes more people into other ecosystems...

WhatsApp

Most of our target audience are students, young adults.

They are easier to reach on WhatsApp.
Faster Response from prospect as well as the business end
It is actually preferred by many of them to communicate the details over WhatsApp.
Widely used. Though the Whatsapp business is only used by 7% of the people, the user-base who is using it is huge.
Customers have easy Access to Account managers or the sales rep they are in touch with.

I’d lean toward WhatsApp for the long run. The adoption rate worldwide is huge, especially outside the US, and people tend to trust it more for personal and even business conversations. Messenger still has strong features, but it feels more tied to the Facebook ecosystem, which not everyone wants to stay in.
