Hello!

I've been trying multiple times, but I need some help figuring out how to connect Google Analytics to HubSpot, if possible.

The goal is to track revenue for each email.

Unfortunately, our website isn't and won't be linked to HubSpot anytime soon.

Right now, I'm manually downloading HubSpot emails and exporting them to Excel.

Then, I have to extract certain fields in GA4 to match up HubSpot IDs with revenue, which takes up a lot of time.

Thank you for your assistance in advance!

@BérangèreL and @KOlmstead the HubSpot integration for Google Analytics will only pull data in for HubSpot hosted websites.

The best way to report on revenue connecting GA4 to HubSpot data is to use a tool like Databox (the only external reporting I'd recommend in this case). This would allow you to connect both sources and create reports using both datasets.

You could do something similar with Power Bi or Tableau, both would be significantly more manual and require a certain level of expertise with those tools that you wouldn't need to use the databox UI.

I haven't done this yet with Hubspot, but I'd probably start by trying to build some javascript for GTM that grabs the ID and the $ and push it into GA4. I'm assuming the issue is getting the revenue to show up in GA4 and not just needing to add UTM tags to the emails.

https://www.simoahava.com/analytics/javascript-101-gtm-part-1/

The short answer is:

Since your website isn't hosted on HubSpot, a direct, automatic attribution integration between HubSpot and GA4 to track email revenue isn't available, forcing you into manual data correlation.

To automate this, you should build a custom solution using the HubSpot API to extract email data and the Google Analytics Data API to pull in GA4 revenue metrics, which can then be combined and processed outside of both platforms, likely using a tool like Google Cloud Platform or a similar service, potentially leveraging Google Tag Manager and a server-side tagging solution like Stape for better data collection.

The long answer is:

The reason the current official HubSpot-GA integration doesn't work for you is that it's designed to connect data specifically when HubSpot is the one hosting the website, which isn't your setup, leaving you with the time-consuming manual process of matching HubSpot IDs to GA4 revenue data in Excel.

The best way to move past the manual exporting and correlating is to automate the data extraction and joining using the available APIs.

You would use the HubSpot API to programmatically pull data about your emails and the contacts involved, which should include the necessary identifiers like email IDs or contact IDs.

Simultaneously, you would use the Google Analytics Data API to extract the revenue and conversion data from GA4, ideally pulling in the same identifiers (if you can pass them to GA4) or session IDs.

The real key here is ensuring you have a consistent user identifier that is passed from the email click (HubSpot) all the way through to the conversion (GA4) so you can correctly join the two datasets.

Implementing Google Tag Manager (GTM) on your website is crucial for this, as it allows you to dynamically capture the needed client ID or user ID and send it along with a custom parameter or even a custom event like email_click to GA4 when a user arrives from one of your HubSpot emails.

Furthermore, using a server-side tagging solution like Stape or running your own server in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or similar is highly recommended.

This allows you to process, enrich, and clean the data before it even hits GA4 or to send the data directly to GA4's Measurement Protocol with maximum control and reliability, ensuring you correctly attribute the revenue.

After the data is consistently collected via GTM and server-side tagging, a custom script or application, perhaps hosted on GCP or another cloud platform, would run the joining logic: it would fetch the email performance data from the HubSpot API, fetch the revenue data from the Google Analytics Data API, and then match the two based on your unique identifier, finally generating the specific revenue-per-email report you need without any manual Excel work.

This comment was generated with the assistance of an AI tool, incorporating my expertise in conversion tracking 🙂
