So far, I've marked the following contacts as non-marketing:
- competitors
- invalid email addresses based on external email validation tool
- unsubscribes
- disqualified status is any of: competitor, seeking employment, bad fit, teacher/professor, bad contact information, or student
- contact has left company (based on data from sales team)

I’ve decided not to mark unengaged leads as non-marketing because we have a reengagement strategy in place that is working pretty well.

Are there any other contacts you’ve marked as non-marketing that I should consider, so I can avoid going into the next contact tier? Thanks!

Hey @JenniFlynn, thanks for reaching out! This is a great question.

I think you already have your bases covered really well! Bounced and unsubscribed contacts should absolutely be set as non-marketing as soon as possible. I typically build workflows that will automatically set a contact to non-marketing if they bounce or unsubscribe just to ensure that I don't miss them before the first of the month!

Do you have any other contact types that don't need to actively receive marketing emails (i.e., distributors, partners, vendors, internal employees)? I'd make sure that they're set as non-marketing along with any contact that hasn't been categorized.

I think it's okay to keep unenaged contacts as marketing contacts as long as you're not running up on your limit, but I would set a timeline for when an unengaged contact is set as non-marketing (i.e., they don't engage with the first three re-engagement emails, they haven't clicked on an email or visited the website in 6+ months and don't have an open deal). You can always set someone back to marketing contact status, so it never hurts to put contacts on the bench to free up space for your active, engaged contacts.

Awesome work, and hope this helps!!

Thanks, Jacob! I like your idea about the unengaged contacts.

I decided not to mark hard bounces as non-marketing because I've found a way to weed through them gradually and find legitimate ones. Many of these contacts have actually been able to receive our emails once unbounced.

Hi Jolle! Do you have any recommendations on how to build out a list to report on this with the option to add into a workflow? We are coming up to running out of space so would love to explore this or at least build reporting to see how often it's happening. We already have in the place the recommended hard bounce and unsubcribe workflows turned on. Thank you!
