What's your understanding of the difference between content strat and digital strat?

I've started a new role as a Content Strategist, coming from a Digital Strategist role, but in my experience these roles are often interchangeable and overlap from business to business. I'm interested to understand how others differentiate, as I'm meant to be defining the role and some processes for the agency I've joined, and they already have someone doing Digital Strat, so I'm trying to work with them and ensure I'm also serving my own purpose. Any insights welcome!

Congratulations on the new role @VMoodley!

In my experience, I've also seen a lot of crossover. It's kind of like terms like inbound marketing and content marketing. There's a difference, but it's not always easy to specifically definet.

FWIW, here's my brain:

Digital Strategy	Content Strategy
Includes content, but ultimately is more	Content can be digital, but is more
Other tools are ads, conversion paths, OOH ads	Blogging, social media, print content, advertorial, video
Focuses more on the distribution of assets in the digital world	Focuses more on content and its distribution, which can include digital but can (and should) be more

And if I were making the switch, I'd probably build a matrix like that with more information, both differences and crossover, and build my job description and responsibilities from there.

@VMoodley if I have anything to add, it would be to identify any gaps in the digital strategy (something you're very familiar with) to create alignment between you and your counterpart as to what a cohesive digital strategy is and then build on that to define your content strategy (including non-digital content as well).

I've often found a content strategist is hired when the digital strategist is overstretched and they're trying to break off some of the responsibilities - not sure if that's the case here, but it does help to define and understand what they're up to so you can account for the overlap as Dan suggested.
