Hi, I am trying to bulk retrieve timeline events created in Hubspot by the Hotjar (website survey tool) integration. In order to use this timeline event endpoint, it seems that I need an event ID. Please let me know what field coming from Hotjar into Hubspot via the integration contains the event ID. I think it might be something like Hotjar's responseid but not sure.

Re: Retrieving Hubspot-Hotjar timeline events

Hi @NNagarajan. First, I'm not a HubSpot developer in a technical sense, but I've been an admin and daily user for a long time. I don't believe the Hotjar integration maps any incoming field (including Hotjar’s response ID) to the HubSpot timeline eventId, so that endpoint is not usable for bulk retrieval of Hotjar-created events from outside the Hotjar app itself. But here's what I did find in some searching.

From what I can tell from this HubSpot Dev doc and this community post, there is no Hotjar-specific field on the HubSpot timeline event that exposes the eventId required by that v3 timeline “get event” endpoint, so you can't derive it from something like Hotjar’s response ID. Instead, the event ID is an internal identifier that only the app which created the custom timeline events (in this case, the official Hotjar–HubSpot integration owned by Hotjar) knows and controls.

The event ID isn’t exposed because the v3 timeline docs describe eventId as an identifier that should be unique to the app and event template, typically generated and stored by the app that creates the events. HubSpot’s older v1 timeline docs and community guidance state that the external system is expected to keep track of event IDs; there is no bulk “list timeline events” or “discover event IDs” endpoint for custom integration events. The Hotjar–HubSpot native integration sends survey responses and recordings into the contact timeline using its own private app and timeline templates, and Hotjar’s public documentation does not document any field in HubSpot that contains its HubSpot timeline eventId or the Hotjar survey response ID.

So here's what Hotjar does send into HubSpot. Hotjar’s integration surfaces items like survey response content and session/recording links as timeline cards and also syncs some properties usable in lists and workflows (e.g., last survey type, recording URL, maybe survey name or score), but these are standard event properties and contact properties, not the timeline event’s underlying ID. Those properties can be filtered on the contact timeline and in lists/automation, but none are documented as corresponding to the timeline event’s eventId, nor is the Hotjar response ID mapped to a dedicated “event ID” property on the HubSpot side.

I asked Perplexity search about the practical implications for bulk retrieval based on this, and here's what I got back directly from the engine:

The GET /crm/v3/timeline/{appId}/event-templates/{eventTemplateId}/events/{eventId} endpoint is intended for use by the same private app that created the event, which has already chosen and stored the eventId value when posting the event to HubSpot.

Because you do not have access to Hotjar’s internal event IDs or its private app configuration, you cannot programmatically enumerate or bulk fetch these Hotjar timeline events via the timeline v3 “get event by ID” route. There is also no HubSpot UI field or API-exposed property on the Hotjar timeline cards that gives you that eventId to reverse-engineer it.

If you need bulk analytics or exports on Hotjar survey responses, the supported path is to export/report from Hotjar’s own APIs or reporting tools and, if needed, sync that data into HubSpot using custom properties or custom events that you own, where you control the event IDs and templates.

So I don't think what you're expecting will work for what you need. It sounds like maybe some custom app and development might be needed. I'd look around the community for someone who could help with that.

Thanks for the detailed reply, @danmoyle. I've already considered exporting from Hotjar’s own APIs directly, but the issue I'm running into is that there's no way for us to map those responses back to any contact in our systems, given that Hotjar doesn't collect an email or any other identifying id. The only link between survey response and contact is provided by the Hubspot-Hotjar integration. I will reach out to Hotjar support and ask if there's anything they can do, since they manage the integration. Thanks for your help.

Hi @NNagarajan

Hey, you cannot directly bulk fetch Hotjar timeline events just using a single event ID field coming from Hotjar into HubSpot. The integration syncs the events into HubSpot, but it doesn’t expose the timeline event ID needed for bulk timeline event retrieval via the v3/v4 APIs. Just for clerification HubSpot event id is totally different from the Hotjar event id.

I hope this will help you out. Please mark it as Solution Accepted and upvote to help another Community member.
