Adding GTM to Our Hubspot CMS Website slows it down greatly

We added GTM to our website (built on Hubspot CMS) and noticed an extreme impact on our site SEO speed metrics that affected SEO

Once we removed GTM we saw an immediate positive impact to speed and thus better SEO, and thus increased organic traffic.

I have been researching and cannot find an instance of this issue anywhere.

Has anyone experienced the same GTM/Hubspot issues?

Hi @molli0707 I can confirm that GTM can slow down your website, depending on how many tags you have in your GTM configuration (since each tag loads its own script).

Where are you adding GTM to your website? via Site Header HTML or the HubSpot integration?

Thanks for the response! I can't confirm where the client added GTM (Html vs HS integration) but they took off to help speed the site up. In looking at their GTM however i do see minimal tags so i am surprised at home much it impacted their site when it was running.

What is better? Via HTML or HS integration?

You're welcome @molli0707, in my experience GTM has always caused a big hit on performance regardless of CMS (which is super counter-intuitive because it's a Google product and you'd think they would have a better solution...)

The HS integration is going to add it globally across all content for the domain.

The site header HTML allows you to add it to specific domains, so if you want to have it on website pages and not landing pages or vice versa (and also blog separately) - this also allows you to configure unique GTM for each situation, which can reduce the amount of scripts firing on each page.

You can even add GTM at the page level if you need a specific tag for specific conversion tracking scripts.

The biggest opportunity with GTM is to customize and create separate containers based on specific tracking needs, which you can then add to specific content.

The more scripts that run on a page, the more impact it has on performance.
