Search endpoint returning empty arrary for emails containing underscore

I'm using the search endpoint /crm/v3/objects/contacts/search to fetch contact data but noticed it returns an empty array if the email (query param) contains an underscore. For example, abc@gmail.com will return a result but fail for ab_c@gmail.com even when both contacts exist in my account.
