Hi,

I'm new to the developer end of HS and I'm trying to implement a webhook that will push data from HS to customer.io. Customer.io gives you the webhook and I have the correct event subscriptions and I've hit subscribe.

What is the next step to "turn it on"? Or do I actually need to make a node app to make this work? And it's just for our internal use.

Thanks so much!

Hey @StPatrick

What you'll need to do is install that app within the HubSpot portal. Once this is done any changes within the portal will trigger the webhook and post to the target URL you've defined. To install the app you need to go through the oAuth2.0 flow. More information here.

This is something you could do using an API client like Postman if all you need is to setup the webhook. If it's more than that you'd likely need to configure a node app for additional logic.

The way the webhooks work with HubSpot is that once the app is installed any time events occur they're triggered and the data is posted to the defined target URL.

Ah I get you, so no you don't need to worry. Once the app is installed (which yes you'd need to do manually via Postman) it's done, takes about 2 minutes. The webhooks will just "work". So basically:

Create your app and configure the webhooks in the Developer portal (which you've done)

Install the app using Postman in your portal

Sit back and watch the events trigger

It's a little dated now but during my time working at HubSpot I put together this article running through the ways in which implementing webhooks can be achieved. At the very end there is a video (which should still work) that shows this in practice. I would have just used postman to install that app to get the behaviour in the video.

making progress -- for those who are here later on you need to go to Basic Info -> Auth. Set a redirect URL (such as your website [hope that's correct]) and then copy and paste the install url to get the authorization screen. Once you have that, THEN you have to do this to get it to appear in your hubspot portal:

https://legacydocs.hubspot.com/docs/faq/installing-an-app

but once you click the install URL you will see a token at the end of the URL. And you need this token for the next step.

(Authorize your app part)

One last question -- in your video you talk about having the webhook running all the time. Is that where you'd create an app so that you don't have to run the GET request manually every 6 hours?

So I was incorrect (it used to be 6 hours) its now 30 minutes as per this documentation. In any case because your are not explicilty requesting data from HubSpot (you aren't using the access token or polling the APIs) there is no need to run anything or do anything.

Once the app is installed if all you are interested in is being notified via webhook of events happening in the CRM (objects being created, deleted or properties being updated) your grand. No need to refresh tokens, or make any additional requests.

It really comes down to what you're trying to achieve. If you need to do anything more than what is outlined above we're moving into creating a basic app that listens on an endpoint for data and pulls additional information using access tokens.
