A private app (and also a public app) is used to authenticate with the HubSpot API. The private app is a replacement for the API keys. You need a private app or authentication through a public app to make API calls against the HubSpot API.

Hello!

We are creating an external bespoke web application (on premise) and wish to authenticate users against HubSpot. The users in question would be CONTACTS in the Marketing Hub (i.e. not HubSpot Users/Teams in Settings).

I found some good articles on API integration and OAuth, but it's centered around private and public apps, which I think it a bit different. The consumer of these API calls would be a custom MS .Net web application running on our on prem data center - not any type of HubSpot app in the marketplace, etc. Does that make any difference?

Thanks.
