GDPR has been quite overwhelming, what steps do I need to take to abide by GDPR? or will it be taken care by email marketing service?

GDPR will NOT "be taken care by [your] email marketing service". Every major service we've worked with states that disclaimer in their terms.

While many marketing professionals have increased their understanding of GDPR in the 9 months since its implementation (in May of 2018), you should consult your own legal professional regarding GDPR-compliance. It's that important.
