Because marketing contact status is not isolated to email sending. It is also used for creating ad audiences. See this article for full details: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/contacts/marketing-contacts

No

Yes

So per the above because you can still create audiences and do other marketing activities with them they still count. In most cases I've worked with, you may be best suited to automate these contacts who unsubscribe from all email to a workflow to remove people like this from your marketing contacts limit especially if you have a large database to already build your audiences or if you are not using the ad capabilities.

Hi @ICloete-Hamil,

@ICloete-Hamil wrote:

1. Why does a contact who unsubscribed from everything, still appear as a marketing contact?

"Marketing contact" is a billing feature, it doesn't say anything about consent: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/contacts/marketing-contacts – it's easier to think of "Marketing contact" as "Billable contact". So yes, an unsubscribed contact can still be billable. There isn't any point in that, you're correct and HubSpot might as well automatically set the contact to non-billable. However, there isn't any feature for that. You need to filter unsubscribed and set the to non-billable ("Non-marketing contact") manually or via workflow: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/contacts/set-contacts-as-non-marketing

@ICloete-Hamil wrote:

2. Will she receive an email?

If you're referring to marketing emails, no, with the exception of transactional emails. https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/how-to-use-transactional-email-in-hubspot

3. Will it count towards my marketing contact limit?

Yes.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!
