Update: Legacy CTA Sunset

Attention: We've recently revised our timeline on March 25th, 2025. For the most current details regarding this change, please check the latest updates in our changelog and the latest community forum post.

Based on community feedback, we have updated our approach to transitioning from Legacy CTAs to the new CTA editor in HubSpot. In Q1 2025, new CTAs cannot be created by the Legacy CTA editor.

Below are more details explaining the plan and changes to be expected for this sunset.

What's changing?

Continued Support for Existing Legacy CTAs

Previously, we intended to sunset existing Legacy CTAs with the Legacy CTA editor. However, sunsetting existing Legacy CTAs has been postponed indefinitely. This means there are no current requirements for migrating Legacy CTAs to the new CTA editor. Customers can maintain their existing Legacy CTAs after Q1 2025.
Any existing Legacy CTAs created with the Legacy CTA editor will remain active with their associated analytics after sunset.

Removal of Legacy CTA Migration Option

Previously, we provided customers with an option to migrate their Legacy CTAs to the new CTA editor. However, the option to migrate Legacy CTAs has been removed and is no longer required.

When is it happening?

The sunset of the Legacy CTA editor is scheduled for Q1 2025, and was previously announced. Following the sunset, the Legacy CTA editor will no longer support the creation of new CTAs. All new CTAs must be created using the new CTA tool after sunset. We are committed to ensuring core feature parity between the Legacy CTA and the new CTA editors. This includes adding features such as A/B Testing and Smart CTAs before the retirement of the Legacy CTA tool.

Important Note: Previously, the Legacy CTA sunset was scheduled for Q4 2024. However, we want to spend more time ensuring feature parity between the two CTA editors (Legacy and the new CTA 2.0 editor) to provide an overall better customer experience.

Thank you very much for the update on the transition from Legacy CTAs to the new CTA editor in HubSpot!

It's great to know that we won't have to migrate our CTAs in a rush.

Keeping support for CTAs created with the Legacy editor is excellent news, as we can continue using our current strategies and analytics without interruptions. Being able to maintain these CTAs beyond Q4 2024 without having to migrate them removes a major concern and gives us more time to adapt to the new tools.

It's also good to know that essential features like A/B testing and Smart CTAs will be added to the new editor before the Legacy editor is retired. This ensures we can fully leverage the new capabilities without losing important functionalities.

Thanks for the update.

In the other thread (https://community.hubspot.com/t5/Developer-Announcements/Upcoming-Sunset-Legacy-CTAs/m-p/867508/highlight/true) for this update there was alot of concern about the CTA functionality on embedded pages or mails and their correlation to analytics/dashdoard etc. With buttons not being tracking any longer and stuff like that.

I just want to be certain, but with this update now the change from Legacy will not affact the existing CTA's and we do not have to make any big plans to migrate and integrate new CTA for our customers?

My understanding with this update is that as of right now we dont have to do a ton of work to be ready for the sunsut of legacy, because it will basically just integrate the old legacy CTAs into the new?

Hi @APetersen23! I work on the CTAs team at HubSpot, so happy to jump in here.

Correct, you don't need to make plans to migrate your existing Legacy CTAs because the sunset of these assets has been postponed indefinitely. Functionality and analytics on emails and webpages will be preserved.

Starting Q4 the legacy CTA editor will be phased out. This means that all new CTAs will need to be created with the new CTA editor.

hi @hseligson @radapop Noted the commitment to ensure feature parity between the new and legacy tools but can we expect Smart functionality in the new tool any time soon? Smart popups in conjunction with the Audiences tool seems like a winner

We currently can't embed certain CTAs to an external site. Is that one of the reasons the sunsetting has been delayed? Is that an issue that's going to be fixed before you sunset the legacy version?

Hi @KBrackman, Can you provide me with a little more info? Are you trying to embed a legacy or new CTA?
You can leverage HTML with the new CTA and link to an external page. Here is the documentation for your reference: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/ctas/create-calls-to-action#design-a-html-cta

We are trying to embed a new CTA into an external website and we can't find the embed button. Is there an easier way to do this like we do with legacy where we just grab the embed code from the builder.

@KBrackman - Understood! However, you can still grab the embed code from the Embedded HTML CTA option. Here is a loom demonstrating the process with the new CTA editor and a screenshot of the embedded code it generates for you, like the Legacy CTA editor.

How do I edit "new" CTAs? Legacy gave us the option to Clone, Edit etc. but no functionality exists for the new style from what I've seen.

Hi there! Cloning and editing is also possible in the new CTA tool. Hovering over your existing CTAs should show you these options:

@hseligson @radapop We understand that the ability to migrate legacy ctas to the new tool has been removed. Unfortunately, that tool was super helpful when, for example, we have a cta that is on a large number of page, like almost 100. We want to be able to edit/rebuild that cta with the more updated/new cta tool capabilites but now we can't use the "migrate" option to move it over. Is there any other option other than to rebuild that cta in the new tool and apply it to all 100 posts manually? It would have been nice to keep the ability to migrate the old ctas indefinately.

Greate work with the new CTAs 👍 We are so looking forward to move over to them. But for us the divided by team feature that is existing for Legacy CTA is very important, when different teams in our case should not have access to change other teams CTAs. And that is the reason we still use Legacy CTA even if the new CTA is so much better. Hope that feature come before the possibility to create Legacy CTA will dissapear in 2025 Q1.

Hi @hseligson. We were excited to leverage the multivariant functionality in CTA (legacy) as a workaround for our current rotating ad space on our WordPress site that we're rebuilding now in HubSpot. Our 3rd party developer informed us of this feature in CTA (legacy) and shortly after found out about the plans to sunset the legacy builder.

Is there any way you can provide a time table on when the multivariant functionality will be available in the new CTA builder? And will it be available before the legacy builder is sunset? Thanks so much.
