When we want to stage a landing page and use "Stage a blank page", then select a template, it then asks us to name the page and the Internal Page Name field is blank (a web page has the page name already populated). This will create the blank page without copying over the meta or URL and put it into Landing Pages instead of the staging site. If I go into the staging site, there is a blank page there with no template assigned.

This appears to be happening with website pages now too. Is anyone else experiencing this?

You could stage a clone instead and just change the template after staging

Thanks for the suggestion. I have had issues with that because we're going from the old drag and drop templates to the new drag and drop theme (if that makess sense). For anyone else having this issue, I talked to HubSpot and it's a known issue that they are working on fixing.

whether you stage an existing page using the stage blank page option or create a new blank page, if you make the URL the same as any live page, it will replace the live page automatically and retain the page data.

If you go the second route, of creating a new staged page, you do have to add all of the meta data manually.

I had an issue last week where I staged a page and when I came back later, the template was missing and I had to start over.

Yes, this also works, just a bigger pain to take over the meta data. HubSpot has since fixed this bug though.

This was actually a bug that has since been fixed. Jennifer is correct that if you name a new page with the same URL, it will replace the existing page when you publish.

That all being said, I don't think you can go from a clone of flexible columns template to a drag and drop column template. I've not tested that out since finishing this particular project.
