Emails getting associated to additional incorrect/wrong contacts and companies

When I look at association history for emails it says it's associated via API. But I have more than one portal where the following is happening:

An email comes in and is associated to different contacts and companies then the once referenced in the email. This is sometimes a thread and sometimes not.

Anyone have this issue and if there is a solution?

I have updated activity associations settings for emails and it still doesn't work for new emails coming in.

In the enterprise portal, I have a custom coded action checking associated records to the record to remove additional email associations but in this professional account I don't have the ability to validate and check this without Data hub.

Would be better if this would not be an issue in general - essentially I cannot rely on accurate email associations.

This thread and info is for contact to company association.

My question is regarding emails and how they specifically get associated to incorrect contacts and companies seemingly for no reason.
