So, i have a business based in Africa that promotes tourism into Africa from overseas. Currently im working off a co.za domain
Is there anything negative about using the .co.za to promote to the UK and USA?

Should i preferably get a TLD like .com?
Eventually i hope to promote into foreign speaking languages and would lik eto have a firm foundation with which to start.

If i do go with a TLD, is there anything wrong with .co or .biz
Thanks in advance

Hi @RZieve,

Purely from a standpoint of familiarity, if you're promoting to an American audience, a .com domain might be more familiar and by extension trustworthy than a top level domain that on a first glance seems novel and by extension potentially less trustworthy. If you have the option to run on a .com domain, that's probably preferrable.

Best regards

Re: Top Level Domains

@RZieve search engines don't disclose how exactly this would be handled. Generative AI provided a decent clarification:

When considering SEO and how search engines crawl, index, and rank your domain, the choice between
mydomain.co.za/us
and
mydomain.com/us
can have implications. Here are some key points to consider:

Domain Type and SEO Implications

Geotargeting:

Country-Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) like
.co.za
: This domain extension is specifically tied to South Africa. Search engines like Google may interpret
mydomain.co.za
as being more relevant to users in South Africa. If your primary audience is in South Africa, this can be advantageous.

Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) like
.com
: This is more global and doesn't tie your site to a specific country. If your target audience is international, using a
.com
domain can be more beneficial as it is universally recognized and trusted.

Crawling and Indexing:

Search engines will crawl and index both
mydomain.co.za/us
and
mydomain.com/us
without any issues. However, the
.co.za
domain might be prioritized in search results for users in South Africa due to its regional relevance.

Ranking Factors:

Relevance and Content: The most critical factors for ranking are the relevance of your content and the quality of your site. As long as your site has high-quality content that meets the needs of your users, it will rank well regardless of the TLD.

Backlinks and Domain Authority:
.com
domains generally have a slight edge in perceived authority because they are more common and trusted globally. However, if you build a strong backlink profile and authority for your
.co.za
site, it can rank just as well.

Specific Use Cases and Recommendations

Local Business Focused on South Africa: If your primary market is South Africa,
mydomain.co.za/us
might be preferable. It signals to search engines and users that your site is relevant to South Africa, which can help in local SEO.

International or Diverse Audience: For a global or international audience,
mydomain.com/us
is generally better. It avoids regional limitations and is universally understood, making it easier to attract and retain users from different countries.

Technical Considerations

Geotargeting in Google Search Console: If you choose a
.com
domain, you can use Google Search Console to set a specific country target if needed. This can help search engines understand the intended audience for particular sections of your site.

Consistent User Experience: Ensure that your site structure, navigation, and content delivery are consistent and user-friendly across different domains or subdirectories. This enhances user experience, which is a significant ranking factor.

Conclusion

Both
mydomain.co.za/us
and
mydomain.com/us
can be optimized for SEO, but the choice depends on your target audience. For a South African-focused audience, the
.co.za
domain is beneficial. For a global audience, a
.com
domain is typically better. The key to SEO success lies in high-quality, relevant content, strong backlinks, and a positive user experience.

Thank you Karsten, appreciated.
I have another issue leading on from the previous.
mydomain.com isnt available unfortunately. I really like my trading name.....IE mydomain.
What is available is my-domain.com
I have done a bit of reading on this topic with regards SEO and come up with a mixed bag.
Do you believe that having a hyphen in ones url can be advantageous, disadvantageous or neither here nor there.
Again, thanks for the insights.
Best
rael

@RZieve regarding the hyphen, here's what you should consider from a technical point of view, again with the help of generative AI.

Minimal Direct Impact:

Search Engine Neutrality: From a technical SEO perspective, search engines like Google treat hyphenated domains similarly to non-hyphenated ones. There is no direct penalty or disadvantage for having a hyphen in your domain.

Keyword Relevance: If your domain name contains relevant keywords separated by hyphens, it can potentially help search engines understand the context and relevance of your site better. For example,
my-domain.com
might be slightly clearer to search engines for the terms "my" and "domain."

Indirect Impact:

User Experience and Click-Through Rates (CTR): As user perception can affect trust and click-through rates, a hyphenated domain might indirectly influence your site's SEO. Lower CTR and user engagement can negatively impact rankings over time.

Hope this helps!
