I have the payment terms listed in another content section, and I'm not
using the Invoice section at all. Then I just make a separate invoice with
a line item "50% Deposit" to send to the customer. The other problem we
have is that apparently Stripe doesn't recognize decimal unit quantities,
such as 105.5 square feet @ $X.XX per square foot. (We sell siding.) I
don't know why a decimal is a problem for an invoice that can just round to
the nearest penny.

@grant_growup I think it's maybe just a matter of verbiage. Deposit payments are supported in the new CPQ quoting tool through payment schedules and partial payments. The feature lets you (and the client) split one-time quote payments over time, such as collecting a deposit upfront while scheduling the balance. It's part of Commerce Hub Professional or Enterprise, where you configure it in the quote's Payments tab during creation.

Setup Steps from HubSpot's KB are:

Create a quote in Commerce Hub CPQ.

Add line items, then in the Payments tab, enable payment schedules for partial/segmented payments (e.g., 50% deposit).

Buyers pay the initial amount on acceptance; automate follow-up invoices for the rest via workflows.

That's what I've seen with the new quoting tool. Hope that helps!

Dan, Thanks for your reply.

I must be missing something, I don't see those options.

I have added a line item but cannot see where to split the payments on the billing or payments tab.

That is how we did it on legacy quotes. Also, if this helps the second payment cannot be scheduled as the timing of when it is due can't be determined up front.

@grant_growup I know we're chatting privately, but I wanted to drop it in here for visibility so others can find value, and maybe some help, in our conversation. 😊

Here's a bit of what I know through HubSpot documentation and research (I'm not in sales so I don't use the quote tool daily). The Payments tab in the quote editor requires specific prerequisites: a connected payment processor (HubSpot Payments or Stripe), Commerce Hub seat assignment (that might be the kicker here), and enabling payments during quote setup. Schedules are supposed to be configured directly in the Payments tab before finalizing, not per line item like legacy quotes.

This is how it's supposed to work in the set-up:

Navigate to Commerce > Quotes and create/edit a quote from a deal.

Add line items, taxes, or discounts in the Line items tab.

Switch to the Payments tab, toggle Payment schedule on, and define installments (e.g., 50% deposit now, 50% in 30 days) by amount, percentage, or due date.

Connect/enable payments if prompted, then Save and send the quote—buyers pay the first installment on acceptance.

In my experience with HubSpot as of late, with the seat changes, that is often a sticking point. I might be simplifying that a bit, so if I'm missing the mark there, let me know. In the meantime, I'll check in with my sales colleagues to see if they're running into any similar issue or maybe have a fix.

Hi @grant_growup,

It looks like manual payments are coming soon through the new CPQ functionality. Once that is live I would expect the payment schedule functionality to be included (this is an assumption, I haven't been specifically told this).

In the meantime, the only thing I can think of for a workaround is to have a specific line item for deposit that is collected immediately and then the remaining payments are set to delayed, either by a specific date or by days/months.

There could be other workarounds like creating a separate deposit payment link and adjusting the quote accordingly, but that seems even less ideal than my original suggestion.

Neither are great, but hopefully that functionality gets carried over soon.

This is the only flaw I'm seeing with my demo of the Commerce Hub quotes. We too require a 50% deposit payment to be made either electronically or through check or wire transfer. The final 50% is due when we deliver our product to the customer (physically).

Hey @TGC007 and @JHarcrow

Thanks for sharing your use cases here! The workaround of creating a separate deposit invoice with a line item is a solid interim approach, and the decimal quantity issue with Stripe is definitely worth flagging. As confirmed earlier in the thread, payment schedules in the new CPQ builder are on the roadmap - hopefully that addresses both of your needs when it lands.

Looping in some of the previous contributors who may have additional context or workarounds!
Payment schedules are not going to help all use cases.

We have to have a use case where we take a deposit that posts to AR but is
not matched to an invoice.

e.g. I get paid $10,000 up front for 6 months of retainer work on a project
estimated at $20,000 but billed by the hour.

$10,000 is posted to the AR Account. As I deliver the hours in month 1 I
raise an Invoice for $4000, month 2 $5000, month 6 $10000, to complete job
that came in under budget. Client receives invoice for $10,000 less $1,000
paid and pays $9,000.

This is critical in many businesses and all businesses in my industry. I
would collect 4x money through Hubspot if I had this functionality. Now
Quickbooks gets my business

Grant
