Hi everyone,

I’ve started importing subscriptions from another CRM into HubSpot, but I’m running into a few issues and would appreciate any advice:

Starting subscriptions in the past – Is it possible to create a subscription with a start date in the past so that historical renewals are visible?

Starting and ending in the past – Can a subscription be set to both start and end in the past (for expired contracts)?

Upsell with pro-rata – How can I create an upsell with a pro-rated charge and then add the item to an existing subscription?

If anyone has done a similar migration or has tips, I’d be grateful for your guidance.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

For your first two questions: you can set a subscription to start in the past, but you won’t see the historical renewals, HubSpot just tracks from the import date forward. If you try to set both start and end in the past, it lets you store the record, but the subscription won’t show up as active or renew automatically. I usually keep expired/legacy subs as static records for reporting, but don’t expect them to behave like live ones.

For pro-rated upsells, HubSpot doesn’t do true proration automatically. What I’ve done is create a one-time charge (like a custom line item or deal) to cover the pro-rated amount, then manually add the upsell to the existing subscription for future cycles. It’s a bit manual, but it works for keeping the books straight.

If you need to track the full history, including past renewals, I’d keep legacy data in a custom property or a separate table, since HubSpot’s native tool isn’t built for deep backdating.
