Hi Hubspot Community

Question: How do I associate contacts who have visited my website with a contact in my CRM without requesting them to fill out a form?

I have imported a list of pre-existing contacts into my Hubspot CRM from my old CRM. I am now running LinkedIn and Google ads to that CRM list. I do not want these contacts to have to fill out a form on my website again because they already did so before I moved to Hubspot. How do I track/associate their ad interactions and website page views without them having to go through the process of filling out a form. I want to be able to see their website page views, ad interactions and track their journey. There must be a way that Hubspot can do this other than form fills.

I would really appreciate any help on this,

Thank you,

Operance

Hi @Operance

There really isn't a way of doing this unless they reconvert via one of the ads or a HubSpot form.

The only way for HubSpot to tie an existing contact (email) to user behaviour like page views, ads interaction, etc. is by capturing a conversion (form submission), dropping a cookie in user's browser and tying it to the contact in HubSpot. Anything else would be, shall I say, questionable, considering current GDPR and privacy regulations.

Hope that helps.

@Operance as I understand HubSpot cookies and tracking, interacting with your ads (as @franksteiner79 mentioned) or interacting with an email link (like clicking on a CTA and visiting your site, but not necessarily filling out a form) can both connect the anonyous user to their contact record. Here are a couple of resources that may help:

Track visitors in HubSpot

Cookies set in a visitor's browser by HubSpot

Contacts Cookie Tracking and Integration

That last one includes this information, which leads me to believe a marketing email click will work:

If you already have Dave's email in your HubSpot account, you can send an identity-tracked marketing email (from Marketing > Email; learn more here). If Dave clicks a link in this email and reaches your site with the HubSpot tracking code installed, the system will associate his previous browsing activity to his contact record through a cookie. This is not possible if you were to just send a sales email from the contact record or via Gmail, however. See this article for a detailed explanation.

Because HubSpot uses cookies to track browsing activity, there are some limitations to what HubSpot can pick up.

I hope that helps!
