Cut company trade abbreviations from their name

Hi,

I am trying to create a format workflow that will clean the company names (i.e. remove any ending trade name abbreviations like inc. ltd. and so on).

The problem that I have is that I can't select a filter where so that it only enrolls the company that ends with " inc" as a single word rather than a combination of letters in a word (this means that the company like "Finc" would get enrolled and become "F" which we don't want).

I had the idea to maybe add a space before "inc" but Hubspot doesn't allow spaces in front of characters to be added.

Any ideas?

@lovroculina could you have the criteria be [If company ends in ", Inc"] instead of just "inc"? I added a comma and space - maybe that will do what you're looking for?

Thank you for the advice, however, it seems that this does not then include the companies that have "Inc" at the end which is the main thing that we want to remove (trade abbreviations so that when we use the company name in the email template it sounds more natural)

@lovroculina with no comma there, I can see that failing. I wonder if HubSpot's Operations Hub with its data tools might help. I see no other mass editing solution unfortunately. 😔

Hello @lovroculina

What you could do is adding a negative criteria to exclude everyting else.

e.g.

ends by "inc" but doesn't contain any of "ainc", "binc", "cinc", "dinc", etc. Keep going with every characters that could be use before "inc"

That would look something like this

Use Excel or Google Sheet to generate all variations quickly and copy paste it to HubSpot. (tips add ";" at the end of every cell before copying or you'll end up with one single value "ainc binc cinc...")

If you find that solution too heavy the other solution would be to create a custom coded action to handle formating.

This can be done with Python custom code.

The process will be to run the following code which will return the company name if it does not end in inc or the striped version if it does.

it's a bit rough and ready but it works.

include: company 'name' as name as an input and include an output as a string as 'result'

def main(event): # Use inputs to get data from any action in your workflow and use it in your code instead of having to use the HubSpot API. company = event["inputFields"]["name"] # Return the output data that can be used in later actions in your workflow. company = company.strip('.,').lower() if company.endswith(" inc"): result = company.strip(" inc") result = result.strip(",.") else: result = company return { "outputFields": { "result": result } }

Thank you for your suggestion!

This seems like a great idea, however, there are also some companies that have more than one letter in front of inc (e.g. sminc, blinc...) so I think it would be impossible to cover all the variations in order to exclude them. I think the Python code will do the trick.

Yes like I said, a custom coded action is best, but I wanted to offer a non-code solution as well for those who don't know how to code.

You don't have to list all the letters before "inc" only the first will do the trick. (e.g. minc will cover for sminc, zminc, ikasudgflkdjhasiluhfdsaluhfminc, etc.)

So basically, you jsut have to copy that list and you will be good to go:

ainc;

binc;

cinc;

dinc;

einc;

finc;

ginc;

hinc;

iinc;

jinc;

kinc;

linc;

minc;

ninc;

oinc;

pinc;

qinc;

rinc;

sinc;

tinc;

uinc;

vinc;

xinc;

yinc;

zinc;

Obvisouly, you will have to do the same for "ltd" and other trade abbreviations.

Note that the Python code you have here is also covering only for "inc" and doesn't cover other trade abbreviations.
